Gunmen kill two in Bayelsa

Again, gunmen suspected to be militants on Tuesday killed two persons at the riverbank of Kuroamagbene in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State.
The victims were said to be relatives of the Special Adviser to the state governor on Higher Education, Dr. Godswill Ziriki.
The killing came three days after gunmen murdered eight persons at Lorbia in the same local government.
Sources told our correspondent that the victims met their untimely death when they tried to prevent the gunmen from stealing a boat anchored at the riverbank.
One of the sources, who pleaded anonymity, however, told our correspondent that the victims were not aware that their assailants were armed.
He said, “They noticed suspicious movements at the riverside and discovered that some persons were trying to steal a boat. They raised the alarm and in the process the gunmen shot them, abandoned the speedboat and ran away.”
Attempts to get the reaction of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, on the matter proved abortive, as calls to his telephone did not go through.
But a senior security officer confirmed the development to our correspondent.
