What made the award – let’s face it, one in a collection of hundreds, at this point – particularly special, however, was its presenter. Swift’s mother, Andrea, took the stage with a moving speech explaining just how far her daughter has come … and how she has a mom’s unique gift of witnessing every step of the journey.
“I’ve seen [music] carry her through every emotion…good or bad,” Andrea Swift noted, audibly choking up as she added, “For many years I was her constant companion. I witnessed a girl with very few friends become one with many, learning to stand up for the things she believes in. Being brave enough to explore her musical curiosity…Giving herself to those in need.
"I am a very proud mom,” she concluded. “I thank the entire music community for taking such good care of her. And to the fans, I know you love her as I love her. And for that, I thank you eternally.”
Taylor herself added her own affection for the country music community, a group she has (perhaps unrightfully) received criticism for turning her back on with the release of her officially “pop” album 1989. “I learned how to treat people with kindness and respect from country music,” she noted simply, much to the approval of the crowd.
Taylor’s mom wasn’t the only parent in attendance that evening. Her dad, Scott, also was in the house, smiling and apparently enjoying watching his daughter move and groove to one of the night’s many stellar performances.
The 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards were held in Dallas April 19 live from AT&T Stadium.
