Five die, 28 injured in Gombe crash

Five people died while 28 others sustained injuries in an auto crash on the Zanbuk-Lubo Road, in Yamaltu Local Government Area of Gombe State on Wednesday.

Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Gombe State, Mr. Galadima Kuteb, who confirmed the incident, said before FRSC officers came to the scene, the police had assisted in rescuing some of the victims.

Malam Sani Abdullahi, one of the survivors, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident occurred on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.

He said he did not know the cause of the crash but that he just found himself in the hospital receiving treatment.

An officer in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, Malam Baba Adamu, also confirmed that five persons died while 28 others were receiving treatment.

He said three of the victims were brought in dead while two later died in the hospital.

“We are going to admit about five of them while the others would be treated and discharged to go home,” he said.

When NAN contacted police officers at the Kwadon Police Division who rescued the victims, they refused to comment on the incident.

Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Gombe State Police Command, Mr. Fwaje Atajiri, said he had yet to get details of the incident.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen have shot and killed an aide to the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, Mr. Eric Ezenekwe.

Ezenekwe, who is Chief Godspower Ake’s personal assistant, was said to have been ambushed, dragged to his house and tortured before he was eventually shot three times in the head.

Ezenekwe’s murder at about 11.20pm on Tuesday at his residence came on the heels of a political crisis rocking the ruling party in the state.

He was reportedly murdered inside his house in Erema, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
