However, the reason for all the hype wasn’t necessarily good.
The 24-year-old Australian MC became the center of controversy when YMCBM first lady, Nicki Minaj, allegedly took a dig at her onstage while accepting the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.
The Pink Print rapper wanted the world to know “when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
The entire audience immediately caught the underlying insult and responded hysterically.
Many fans suspected that Minaj was throwing ”shade” at Azalea, because she’s been rumored to be working with a team of ghostwriters for quite sometime.
News about the reported beef between the two female MCs began spreading all over the Internet.
Due to the bad press they’ve both received in light of the award show, both women have decided to respond accordingly with official statements in regards to the situation.
On Wednesday, July 2, the “Fancy” rapper posted a statement on Instagram, sharing her perspective of the alleged “beef.” “I have to say the general explosion of pettiness online in the last few days is hard to ignore and honestly … lame,” Azalea wrote. “If I had won the BET award that would’ve been great but it wasn’t my year and I don’t mind — so you shouldn’t either.”
“I’m unbothered by anything that ‘happened’ at the BET awards, and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time. Anyone who wishes me well is welcome in my life and those who don’t can’t get any more of my time. I hate to see everyone exhausting themselves on my behalf over things that I’m still not sure even exist and don’t matter. Just let it go.”
The “Pills N Potions” rapper took to Twitter with her response the same day. “The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!” Minaj tweeted. “I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of ‘Fancy,’ publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.”
